Hi

im new here, not sure what I’m wanting to say but I have been diagnosed with breast cancer awaiting biopsy results on type and plans going forward ect… it’s hard to wait though! Work with the children keeps me busy and my own 4 kids after school, but once they are asleep I’m finding it hard to settle.

I suppose I’m asking what tips do you have as I know going forward I’m going to need them for other periods of waiting.

any advice for telling my 13.15.7 year old (also have a 22month old boy) about it and how to keep their life’s as normal as possible would be great.

Thankyou

rachel

  • Hi Rachel

The wait after diagnosis is really hard when we just look and think the clock is ticking and it can feel like nothing is happening. Many people find that it can help just looking at what happens next - our next appointment is on whenever and then we put that in a box and say ok now get on with the rest of life. When we are not busy though our thoughts can get the better of us and sometimes just recognising that for what it is can be helpful.

On the children front we have a really good guide talking to children and teenagers and there are some really good books too, one we found quite useful was "The Secret C" by Julie Stokes - we managed to borrow a copy through our local library. We were really lucky that we got great support from my son's school too that ensured our son got a consistent message both at home and school and it also meant that they could put a bit more support in place for him.

yes it does help to have the routine and know what’s happening next, my mind wanders when I’m not busy. I know the day will come soon enough though.

Thats the book I got for my kids so I’m so glad it is a good one Blush

I’m hoping the schools help I’ve told two out of the three schools ready for sept. But with it being new teachers ect I know itl take a while to put things in place.
