My mum was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer ( spread to lymph node, lungs, liver and bones) last summer. She started hormone chemo tablets in September. Her treatment has been inconsistent. Not meeting with her consultant until December. The chemo has slowed the spread but the side effects of the tablets are becoming worse. After talking to mum today, I have a feeling that the next meeting with her consultant to discuss the results of her scan will prompt her to stop treatment. I think there are other avenues to explore such as trying different chemo tablets. I know I will need to respect my mums wishes but how can I get her to try something different?
Hi SG1
Sorry to hear about your mum. I hope she feels able to confide in you all the choices she had been given. The oncologists will talk them through the options available and that may well include a path the promotes quality of life above other courses of action.
It can be difficult for any of us to accept the decisions of a loved one but the best any of us can do is to try and support them. Then we might find we need support with that to. I know I found it very hard when my wife was very clear on not wanting a prognosis - but I came to realise they are at best a guess.
<<hugs>>
Steve
