End of life - how can Paliative care nurses be so sure someone will die within days??

Hi, my mum has kidney cancer which spread to her lungs. She was given 18 months nearly 7 years ago. She was put onto Paliative care last November and they said it was unlikely she would make my wedding last December. I got a call last Thursday from her Paliative care specialist to tell me to come home, that mum had days to a week left.
we had a hospital bed delivered and she’s peaceful in the lounge. Today they put a low grade morphine pump on and inserted a catheter. She’s had terrible falls for a week and bruised and battered. We have come together as a family this weekend to say our goodbyes but she seems so perky! She’s still chatting away, eating cake. Nothing else. She’s only 5 and a half stone snd her body is failing.
we can’t understand how she can seem ok and how they know she’s going to die? I’ve taken the week off work but my dad is in denial and think she’s going to last weeks. Anyone else have this experience? I guess the specialists know by certain signs, it just doesn’t seem real…..

Any advice really welcome Heart️

  • I’m sorry I don’t have any advice as we aren’t quite at that stage yet in our journey but I just wanted to respond to say I hope you get comfort from the fact that in herself your mum seems upbeat and as you say, perky.

  • I cannot offer any insight into this process, but I will soon be facing it with my mum. She is on the same journey.

I guess the nurses are talking from a great deal of experience, whereas I have no experience of this whatsoever. I would take each day as if it were the last, and consider any more days a blessing and a bonus, rather than assume she has longer, when she may not.

Sending you a big virtual hug xx
