Dad has cancer

I like in London and my dad lives in South Africa. He has a lump on his neck that's just gotten bigger and bigger, there was a lot of waiting because government medical is slow in SA, but 2 weeks ago they did a biopsy and said it's metastatic melanoma. After a lot of back and forth with tests the Dr called him today with results of his PET scan. They found cancer in his colon but they're not sure if that is the origin of the cancer, they need to do an endoscopy. On Monday he's getting booked into hospital so they can arrange the endoscopy as soon as, but he's starting chemo on Tuesday.

I'm feeling very lost and confused. We don't know what cancer or what stage or even how the chemo will get done. It's frustrating because it's not clear cut what it is, where it is and how to treat and I don't know what to do.

  • Hi

Sorry to hear about your dad, it must be extra difficult with him some far away and under different medical conditions to the UK.

Do you know what form of chemotherapy he is going to receive? That is often a big clue as to what is being treated though some drugs are more general purpose than others.

Does your dad have support locally? Some chemotherapy types can make the patient fairly unwell (but hopefully the cancer sicker still!).

    kind regards

  • Hi Steve,

Thank you for your reply. The distance and the poorer health care is making it feel even worse. Unfortunately he just knows he's starting chemo on Tuesday, he's not even spoken with the oncologist directly, it was the ENT doctor that updated him with the PET scan results about the cancer found in his colon. I don't know if the doctor might've said and he was in too much shock to absorb it or if he's only finding out on Tuesday. As soon as I know I'll update thank you.

He does have people there but they've always made him do all the work, even when he's been ill he had to still take care of everybody else. My sister still lives in SA but she's over 2hours away from him, she's planning to go visit him next weekend if he's back home from the hospital but she can't visit often.
