Hi,

my mum is on 2ww and had biopsies, mri and ct scans done. It's been three weeks since these were done and we have heard nothing. We asked the doctors and they say they have heard nothing. What's your experiences? How does the 2ww work?

  • Hi

Waiting for the results of tests and scans can be a very anxious time and it's natural to worry that things aren't progressing fast enough.

The "2ww" you refer to means in England you should see a specialist within 2 weeks from being referred by your GP. In Northern Ireland, the 2-week wait only applies for suspected breast cancer, and Scotland and Wales don't have the 2-week time frame to see a specialist.

Once all the tests are done the results will be discussed at the MDT (multidisciplinary team) meeting where all sorts of professionals will discuss what treatment your mum needs. Clicking on the link will give you more details about this.

If it has now gone past the time your mum was told to expect her results, she should give her consultant's secretary a call to see if the results are back yet and, if not, to find out what the delay is and when she should expect to hear.

If your mum needs treatment, then if she is in England, Scotland or Northern Ireland the current targets are:

    • no more than 2 months (62 days) wait between the date the hospital receives an urgent referral for suspected cancer and the start of treatment
    • no more than 31 days wait between the meeting at which you and your doctor agree the treatment plan and the start of treatment

In Wales it's 62 days or less from when you first see your GP and they suspect cancer.

Wishing you and your mum all the best
