I am 20 years old and almost 2 months ago my dad was diagnosed with advanced melanoma which had spread to his brain, lung, groin, neck and a few other areas. I am away in a different city for university which is quite hard. Today he came up to where i am studying to receive Gamma Knife radiosurgery on the 9 tumours growing in his brain. It is the first time i had seen him in a few weeks and the first time i had seem him since he started immunotherapy. His face was all puffy because his glands were swollen and I felt very cautious of him being tired and in pain. He went back home a few hours ago after almost 12 hours in the hospital today and this was one of the hardest goodbyes since the diagnosis. I am really struggling to do uni work and i just feel generally quite low (anxiety feels at an all time high and i am worried about friends, hobbies etc). I am not the best communicator so i wanted to join here and see if anyone has words of advice.
Hi rls2002. My Dad also has cancer. I'm sorry yoyr struggling at the moment. My best advice is to be kind to yourself, what your going through is huge. Talking about what your feeling can also help. You don't have to cope with everything right now just try and stay on top of things as best you can. Take care of yourself.
Hi there, I am so sorry to read about your dad, this must be so difficult for you both. I do suggest you talk to your student support services at uni. Firstly they will advise you about any adjustments you might need to your studies whilst your adjust to your Dad's diagnosis and they'll also have advice and support for you. I hope you have some good friends that can support you, either at uni or back home and I'd encourage you to share how you're doing so they can help. Best wishes
Hiya, I am so sorry to hear about your dad, I hope you both are doing okay. Thank you for your message, I really appreciate it. Staying on top of things feels challenging but I am slowly getting back on it!
Thank you :)
