Dad’s loss of appetite - bowel cancer

Hi folks, I’m new here and I’m very concerned about my Dad’s lack of appetite. He had bowel surgery a year ago and was eating ok after that and then by April this year he was going off his food again and a colonoscopy revealed a new tumour which he had removed a month ago. He hasn’t eaten a meal since May - just living on pro-cal shots and ensure but not getting enough calories through them. We hoped that he would start eating gradually again since his surgery a month ago but he has no appetite and when he tries to eat he wretches. The will Is there, he tries things but his appetite has completely gone. I’m worried he won’t be strong enough for any follow up treatment. He’s only spoken to a dietician once, they are hard to get in touch with. Has anyone had a similar experience with a loved one? Any tips welcome. Thanks for reading Slight smile

  • Hi

Sorry to hear about what you and your dad have been going through. One of Janice's many problems some time ago was around weight loss but that was actually even before her cancer was diagnosed. Most of her life a referral to a dietician would have actually been around losing weight.

There is quite a lot of information on our page on eating problems here, there is even a section on coping being a carer because that is hard too - often surprisingly so.

  • Thanks Steve, it’s tough isn’t it. The dietician has given him lots of advice but he just has no appetite and he wretches when he tries to eat something small. He’s been to the doctor this week to increase his antidepressant dose so maybe he’ll start to feel better which may help his appetite.
