Travel insurance

Hi all. This is a bit of an odd one but couldn’t think where else to give this information. My dad has terminal cancer (sarcoma, lung, liver, kidney). Since his diagnosis in November he’s been an absolute trooper, consistent beating the odds. However we do seem to be nearing the end of the road now. On Sunday I am due to go on holiday to America for 3 weeks. My dad has said I absolutely have to go, wouldn’t hear any talk of cancelling it. However it worries me that while I’m away he is going to pass. Does anyone know of any travel insurance that would cover flights home if I needed to get back urgently, either for end of life or to help with funeral arrangements etc. It sounds so cold to just say it like this. Believe me I’m in absolute pieces but I’ve got over it again and again and my dad has said he’d be furious if I didn’t go, the kids are looking forward to it etc so I am going ahead with it, but just want to be covered just in case. Thanks in advance

  • HI Torz

Sorry to hear about your dad. Life's cruel but as your dad is telling you, life goes on too. (cruel as it sounds)

I'm not an expert on travel insurance but my understanding is that most policies cover you for family medical emergencies. If you haven't taken out any cover for your trip it might be worth speaking to your travel agent or perhaps even your bank. My own travel insurance is linked to my bank account and is part of the benefits of it. The MacMillan helpline might also be able to provide some more detailed guidance. You can  call the Macmillan Support Services on 0808 808 00 00 - most services are open 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week Clicking here to see what is available. This service provides lots of cancer information, emotional support, benefit and financial guidance or just a listening ear.

I hope you get something sorted and have a fabulous trip.

    love n hugs

  • Hi

I'm sorry to read that your dad is very poorly and it's natural to worry about whether to go on holiday or not and, if you do go, will your travel insurance cover you if you have to come home early. Have you checked the insurance you took out when you booked the holiday to see if you're covered?

If your policy doesn't cover you then you might like to join us over in the travel insurance group where you'll find recommendations from other members regarding travel insurance. To do this just click on the link I've created where you can then join and post in the same way as you did here.

Once you've joined look for the 'recommended travel insurance' thread as that's where the majority of recommendations are. You could also start a new post there asking if anyone is aware of travel insurers who will provide the cover you're looking for.
