Hi, very new to everything to do with cancer, thankfully, it’s never been something that I’ve had to deal with. No one I have loved has every suffered from it but that’s changed now.

my grandad has been diagnosed with a cancerous tumour in his bladder, they think it may have grown so big it’s pushed into his bowl.

I’ve looked up the statistics and I see them saying 5 years to live is the average, which is not great but also at least some time.

the main thing that I am struggling with is how long we have to wait for all the information, he is getting the biopsy today and it will be two weeks from that before they can discuss it at their meeting they have on a Tuesday so it won’t be until at least the 3rd of august that he will hear about staging and the next steps.

Not really sure what to expect but I’m worried it is a later stage than we want, although the doctor does seem optimistic that they can keep it at bay at least even although she has said we can’t remove it.

  • Hi @emxx and welcome to our community though sorry to hear about your grandad.

Waiting for information is a struggle for everyone and while as you have found it easy to find average statistics that show 55% or people have lived 5 years or more that is not really the most useful statistic since it was based on people treated more than 5 years ago and we have yet to find the average person anyway.

There is a lot of information on bladder cancer here but you probably have already found that.

What might perhaps be more useful to you at this point is looking at Supporting a family member with cancer, I know I had to work through my own emotions before I could be the most helpful - and that can be really hard. My wife's cancer is not removable but she had two types of chemotherapy and for now her cancer is stable - with help we found a world of living with cancer and it works for us.

    <<hugs>>
