I don't know how to feel or what to do

I can't think straight. I love my mum. We've just found out she has cancer, and I just can't breathe, or think. I want my mum to be okay. I feel selfish. I feel ignorant. I feel like the woman who gave me life might leave my life. And i want to be strong for her. But, I'm not. And i don't know how to be there. I live on the other side of the country and I'm in my last year of uni, doing my dissertation. I always thought I had a plan forward, and now I don't know what to do.

  • Hi

Well done for coming here - first and foremost let me say you are not selfish or ignorant - of if you are so is everyone else.

Your mum must be so proud of you but it is so usual to feel shock when we first hear a cancer diagnosis. If we look at Your feelings when someone has cancer I know I recognize a lot of those steps. As you are at uni there will be a student support unit and it may well be worth talking to them and see what support they can offer.

  • Hello lovely

I agree with Steve, you've done well to come here. An experience linked to cancer can be isolating and particularly tough when you're going through a transition in life ie. Uni. There may be lots of demands socially at uni too alongside uni work.

I think it's a good idea to look at the support that uni offer you too. Maybe someone that you trust in your personal like on side also as there may be times where you may not be yourself and this patron may be able to look our for you. Maybe understanding that you may not want to go out or may need some extra with, cage and attention.

Things can be very mind blocking too so take use of extensions where needed for your work

    Take care :)

  • Hi friend, I am glad u are reaching out for support. Make sure u talk to lectures. There are many options for u. Take your time and don’t make any rash decisions. You are not being selfish. Your mum would want what’s best for u and is so proud of u achieving your goals.
