My dad has recently been diagnosed with prostate and secondary bone cancer. He’s had a one off dose of radiotherapy (which has reduced his nerve pain so may be repeated in 6 months) he will start chemo next week.
I wondered if anyone can recommend things that would be useful for us to have available to keep him comfortable and entertained. He’s always been a very active man (he’s in his late 60s) so is finding it frustrating to not be able to do what he always has done physically.
I was thinking of putting a care package together for him and my mum and wondered if anyone can suggest things that they’ve found invaluable, including practical things, fun things, essentials and so on. Any ideas gratefully received!
Many thanks, Emma x
Hi Emma88, My Mum has SCLC, for her Chemo days, I put together a care package - Bonjela, for sore mouth (Ulcers), lip balm, a good moisturer, (Udderly smooth from Amazon) as her skin dried out pretty bad, a blanket for cold & tired days, a Thermometer, to check temp every day. Good company, is great for their moral as it must be hard to keep going. Making them laugh, through the hard times!!! Wee sweets to suck on if they have a rotten taste from the Chemo, (Worthers Original). I hope this helps.
Love Terri xx
Hi,
Im so sorry to hear about your dad. My mum is starting chemo on Friday. I made her a care package. Here are a couple of things that I put in for her:
Ginger sweets for the nausea,
Speciality teas, I picked turmeric and ginger and a sleep aid one
Face suncream - a requirement of her type of chemo
a nice hand cream and lip balm
warm socks
water bottle
extra bits like tissues and nice tinned drinks
notepad and pen
Costa voucher (as it’s in the hospital)
We also picked some headscarf’s out together
Mostly practical but I just want her to have those sort of things to hand. Hope it helps in some way x
Thanks Sigourney
Dad is starting chemo tomorrow, sorry to hear about your mum too, I hope it al goes as well as possible for her on Friday.
Great ideas, he has some bits for tomorrow but I’ll certainly add some more things for his next appointments.
All the best to you and yours x
Emma
Hi all - my sister is starting chemo in the next couple of weeks - she has recently had a radical hysterectomy due to neuroendocrine cervical cancer diagnosis. Anyway, I just want to be as supportive as possible and am so glad I have found this forum. Will get stocked up on the recommended items and am looking forward to chatting with you all as we start this journey. Sending best wishes to all x
Hi RosaRed, sorry about your sister and you are here. This group is great especially when it gets hard. Its a safe space too. My Mum has Sclc and was only given 6 weeks without treatment . She took treatment and done so well, given her a further 7 months so far, she is very upbeat and a wee fighter.
Sending you and your sister all my love xx
Terri
