How can I help my Mum feel more in control and happier through her Chemo?

My mother (aged 72) was diagnosed with Breast cancer..unfortunately like so many others around the world. Shes physically feeling ok after the sessions..but as a lifelong control freak (she wont mind me saying that lol)...shes finding it hard to stay in control or her emotions and of her body.

Has anyone else had this issue? How do we reassure her? How or what options are there for her to regain an element of selr control or awareness of the treatment? Her main worry is that with each treatment she dosent know if its working. What do I tell her? Are there any medical options to explore??

Thanks

Stay frosty all...love this world.

  • Hello and welcome to the community, although sorry to hear your mum has some concerns over treatment. Your mother is about the same age as me, and as we were growing up, the stories of chemo were horrendous. Chemo treatment has come a long way since then and the way people react is very much improved. Although some people have nasty side effects, others come through it well, and we know that any or no side effects have no bearing on how well the treatment is going. I had no side effects for my own cancer and it did the trick. I was always anxious that something nasty was going to happen, but it never did, and maybe that is what mum is worried about. Try and reassure her that modern chemo drugs are much advanced on the old days. It is important that mum stays well hydrated, so make sure she has water to hand at all times to keep drinking. If she doesn't like water, some people recommend lightly flavoured lemon barley water to help get it down. You may also like to join the Breast Cancer Group (link). If you know what drugs mum is on, the ladies may be able to share personal experiences. Just to add. A common side effect of chemo is fatigue and this catches up with you towards the end and beyond. Lots of rest and light exercise if possible helps. I hope all goes well. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.
