Hi,

I am new to this but really need somewhere to reach out for support.

my mum was diagnosed with breast cancer a couple of months ago and has had an operation which was successful in removing the lumps she had. Unfortunately she has to have chemotherapy due to one of her lymph nodes having traces of cancer in it. She is so concerned and worried about how she is going to react and cope with the chemotherapy- we have no idea how intense ect it will be yet. The doctors have said they want her to have it so there is less chance of the cancer coming back and they will get rid of any cancer still lingering. She’s of the mentally that it’s all over her body which we’ve tried telling her is not the case - but I can’t deny that this is also a fear of mine - what if it’s spread?

I feel so helpless as I don’t live close by and I’m worried about her mentally coping as well as physically. I feel like I’m living in a nightmare but then feel guilty for saying that because it’s not me going through the cancer. I worry my dad will become overwhelmed with having to take care of her the next 6 months - but he’s very much a typical “it will be fine” guy!

any advice or words of wisdom are soooo welcome

thanks!

  • Hi

Welcome to our wonderful club though sorry to hear about your mum.

The doctors would not recommend chemotherapy unless they thought if would help your mum - including her being strong enough to take it. They will be checking your mum out before/during/after the chemotherapy and will be looking to see if there is any sign of spread. They will be much more effective that merely hoping some kind of symptoms show up.

You feeling helpless is so common, if we look at Your feelings when someone has cancer we can see how common these feelings are. Sometimes it helps just to recognize - I feel bad - anyone in this situation would feel the same.

Well done for coming here and thank you for posting because together we all help each other feel perhaps a little less alone.

    <<hugs>>
