Sorry to read about what has happened to your family. Most of us on here are just friends and family on the same journey so I do not really think I can answer your question, what I might suggest is either to post in Ask a Nurse or ring the helpline as they might be able to give you a more "medical" answer.
Hope the op goes well for your friend, most people get a bit nervous around these.
