Hi my dad was diagnosed with aml last September, he was 70. He took part in a clinical trial cpx-351 and achieved remission in December. As of 3 weeks ago he’s relapsed and they are treating him with hydroxyurea, as he’s not fit for any further curative treatment,he was on this drug 4 days and was admitted to hospital with sepsis. He’s been in hospital nearly 3 weeks and they’ve had to stop his hydroxyurea so that’s a huge concern. I’m worried the aml will spread and as he’s so vulnerable to more infections only his wife gets in to visit. No one is talking about ‘how long’ and as I am 3 hours away and can’t get to visit him I’m going out of my mind. He is trying to keep positive as is his wife so I don’t want to go behind their backs and call hospital about when I should mobilise but at the same time I want to see him while he’s still here, I don’t know what to do? He’s on morphine, IV antibiotics and oxygen, he had ct scan yesterday as his abdomen is distended (spread or infection?), worried sick!

  • Hi

Sorry to hear about this, sepsis is not fun - my wife had than before her cancer was diagnosed. I am sure you know he is in the best place for him at the moment and while it is easy to understand the restriction is does not help how you feel.

My wife never wanted to know 'how long' - and in truth nobody can actually tell. I struggled with this until I did a living with less stress course. I was certainly much better at guessing a worse outcome that what actually happened and it meant I did not always get to appreciate the good days.

    <<hugs>>
