My mam has been diagnosed with lung cancer it is in her lymph nodes unsure where the primary is. The biopsy has been sent for further testing I think that is so they can determine the treatment. It’s all so confusing and upsetting and I have so many questions.
We are waiting for oncology appointment a head scan and breathing tests. I’ve been doing some reading about small cell and non small cell cancer which scares me.
is the prognosis poor what ever the type is?
Hi
Welcome to the community though so sorry to hear about your mum. You are right that they oncology team will be doing tests to decide on the best treatment and it might help to look our pages on lung cancer here that might help answer some of your questions. You might also join our Lung cancer forum and for more technical questions use Ask a Nurse.
Cancer survival statistics tend to cut off after 5 years simply because it becomes very difficult to decide if the cancer or something else ended up being the thing someone died from. Unless someone has a need for a prognosis it is probably not worth looking at those - anyway treatments are improving all the time.
My wife's cancer is quite different but spread throughout her lungs. Chemotherapy has rendered it stable and now we have been living with cancer for six years and intend to go on with that happy state for some years yet.

Hi Steve
thank you for your reply. Such positive news to hear your wife is living well with her diagnosis. I have been a A&E nurse for such a long term and fealty with some of the sickest of the sick and always remain positive and strong for my patients, I know I need to try and keep up that mentality. I’m just very scared of why the future holds including how she will be when she starts treatment etc. My mam is 63 and relatively fit she is mentally very strong so I hope this works in her favour.
Thanks again. You take care of yourself and I’m sending love and well wishes to your wife.
