Hello

my elderly dad is undergoing cancer diagnosis, he potentially has an advanced melanoma stage 3 or stage 4.  He also has Alzheimer’s which in a way is a blessing because he is not at all worried about his melanoma.

I’m finding the diagnosis process frustrating, his ct scan was cancelled at the last minute yesterday because he hadn’t had a recent blood test to confirm that his kidney function was ok. I wasn’t aware that he needed a blood test.  His blood test appointment is on the 21st July as there were no earlier appointments available. And he had his biopsy two weeks ago and I haven’t heard anything back from that.

I’m guessing that the NHS is just extremely busy.

thanks

  • Hi

Sorry to hear about your dad and especially the issues with the CT scan. The diagnosis process is very frustrating - I think just about everyone on here will recognize that. If we look at the pages on melanoma here we can see a link to pages on waiting for test results.

We know the advice we all hear about getting treated earlier is better - this is mostly to get people to see their GP. Once we are on a cancer journey though sometimes the system does seem to go in to slow motion, it is important though to remember we need the right treatment and that takes time - one tip though is to find out when the results of tests are expected as that can help to give a sense of control that might be missing otherwise.

    <<hugs>>

Thank you Steve for your reply, it really helps

the waiting is very hard, but I’ve seen on other people’s posts that they have had to wait a very long time for diagnosis and treatment.

the consultant said 7 to 10 working days so it shouldn’t be long now, I’ll just have to be more patient.

    take care!

We're all waiting on my mum's diagnosis for possible secondary cancer. It is torture, but we're keeping busy to stop spinning out too much, keeping conversation open and honest but supportive and optimistic. And spending time with her with lots of hugs. Hoping you all hear soon.

Thank you Lottie21, I am sorry to hear that you and your family are going through the waiting, it is horrendous.  Hope your mum gets good news (crossing my fingers for you).

just got my dad’s results, he has stage 4 cancer which is inoperable.  It’s is such a blessing that because of his Alzheimer’s has no idea. Hopefully we can keep it that way.

    Take care
