Lung cancer and covid

Hi Everyone,

My mum was diagnosed with lung cancer on November 17th, and that surgery was an option. Her operation was planned for 12th January however she had a positive covid result on the 9th so the operation was cancelled.

We've been very fortunate in that Mum never had any difficulties with covid, she literally just lost her sense of smell.

But now she's worried when her operation will be as, it's the unknown of will they operate if covid still shows up in her system etc.

Just after any information or advice if anyone's been through the same thing? It's such a difficult question to answer and having searched the Internet for many hours I still haven't found any information.

Thank you in advance

  • Hi Gemma

    Welcome to our safe zone.....

Sorry to hear about Mum's diagnosis, but good to know that surgery is an option, I can say that as long as Mum has a negative covid test once the next surgery date is allocated, the treatment will go ahead.

If Mum is able to be tested again, and she is negative, maybe she could get in touch with her oncologist. She will always be tested at her pre-op to ensure that no covid has returned - some hospitals will require two covid negative tests before patients can come in to the specialist wards, but your mum's oncologist will be able to advise if that is necessary.

I am not a medical expert and the advice above is only from experience, but hopefully this will reduce the worry somewhat, a quick call to Mum's oncologist should give her some of the answers she needs.

    Good Luck

    Hi Lowedal,

Thank you so much for your reply, that is reassuring to think if she provides a negative test then things maybe able to progress forward.

I've ordered her a home test so fingers crossed things will be on the up :)

    Take care xx
