Hello Everyone

I'm struggling with being in a position of management at work due to the confrontation that comes with it. I am a Retail Manager so as well as dealing with frustrated customer's ( of which I have never struggled ) I also have to deal with a very young, immature workforce that can and will always, test my patience.

Patience and emotional strength is something that I find myself lacking so I would be ever so grateful if anyone can share any coping mechanisms that have helped shift perspectives to better allow them selves to detach home struggles with work

Thank you in advance Pray I will be sure to keep in the loop with the group discussions & share anything I've found that helps manage the emotional distress

  • Hi,

Does your employer offer an employee support programme or something similar? We often need some safe place to let go of the frustrations that otherwise can overwhelm us. I know retail can be a very taxing situation and in management it can be something of being between a rock and a hard place. For many young people of course retail is there first experience of work and it can be difficult for them. Sometimes frustrated customers will lash out and that is something those young people will very likely not know how to cope with - and of course it is not really fair on them either.

When Janice was really ill I ended up doing a living with less stress course with Maggies. Probably the biggest thing I learned was on living in the here and now rather than worrying about some dark future - and I could imagine it much worse that it ever turned out to be. The conscious breathing exercises were good for relaxation but also good when dealing with highly charged encounters - that old saying of take a deep breath can really work. It helped that when I was really overloaded I was sent home by HR and my GP signed me off with stress- 48 days away from work really helped be defuse and refocus on what we needed more than perhaps on what I wanted.

    <<hugs>>
