My mum is going in for a liver resection and I'm so scared about the outcome of the operation and just want somewhere to talk to people and maybe get some advice on how to feel better? Is there anyone else going through this who could talk to me about their experiences?

  • Hi ,

I just noticed your friends request. My mum has had two liver resections and we are very grateful she did . It is a bit frightening but it really gave her so much more .
Her first was four small wedge resections that she recovered from very quickly . The volume of liver removed does impact post op recovery . The second year she had 73% removed which was a much bigger procedure and took a few months to recover . The second operation was at a centre of excellence for the liver and they kept her in for the best part of two weeks . It took a wee while for the right balance of oral meds . My mum was 69 at the time but some younger patients are but of a fast recovery program and discharged quicker than that .
In terms of after care the liver regenerates quite quickly and you could see the difference as it did . What an amazing organ ! It has remained clear ever since .

For me the worst part was a few days after surgery as her epidural was removed and it was sore for her to move. She slept a lot .

On the whole I only have gratitude in my heart for her team . She has had many good years .

It is harsh watching people you love having to endure painful procedures . We worry sick about them and artfully pop on our masks to hide our own pain from them . Encouraging them forward .

But it was all worth it . Send your mum a big hug from me and a smooth recovery .
Ask me anything you like . I think I have accepted your friends request . Technology!!

Take care of yourself too !
