Hi all, we’re new to these forums but not new to cancer. Second time around for my wife who was diagnosed with a new breast cancer again in the summer, two years after the first.

She’s now undergoing 4 rounds of chemotherapy and we’re doing our best to avoid any risk of catching covid. The problem is, we have a young son who will turn four next week. Keeping him entertained and active now the summer is over is getting harder each day. We’re keeping him home and simply don’t want to risk him or any of us mixing with others. Kids aren’t so good at social distancing, not touching their face etc.

Are there any other families in the same position? Other than walks in the park (while avoiding the playground), we’re struggling for ideas. Any advice or tips much appreciated!

Thank you.

  • Hi , our son is now 16 so not totally in your position but then my wife was diagnosed with cancer quite some years ago. While we did not have covid of course there were the usual rounds of all sorts of illnesses and when going through treatment my wife did manage to pick up a couple of infections and was admitted for IV antibiotics - often much to her own annoyance!

When my son was younger I did a "man enough" course and something that really demonstrated was about the importance of parents giving attention to their children. One game we played just walking along was spotting numbers that add up to ten.

Some of the suggestions from colleagues with younger children include:-

Creating an obstacle course with garden canes

    Setting up a football goal

Following a facebook group "my bored toddler"

Printable colouring sheets ( specific recommendation was http://coloring-4kids.com/ )

Using fallen leaves for paint printing - though they said that was very messy!!

    Virtual dance class - https://www.thisgirlcan.co.uk/activities/disney-workouts/ and https://www.nhs.uk/change4life/activities

and towards getting ready for school perhaps https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/levels/zxybmsg

Then from me - good luck.

    <<hugs>>
