Hi

I am new to the forums.  My mum was diagnosed in November 2019 and had radiotherapy in December.  She then developed pain, sickness, lack of appetite and hiccups in August which is steadily getting worse.  We are waiting for at CT scan and I am frightened as to what they will find as the consultant said there was no more treatment they could offer if it came back.

I am so frightened for her.

  • Hi and welcome to the community though so sorry to hear about your mum.

Any new symptoms can be very worrying and clearly there is something to investigate. Waiting for scans is often said to be one of the most difficult times that we have a term for it - scanxiety. When is clear though is that no amount of worry will change the result. If is is the cancer come back and assuming nothing else has changed then the plan would move to ensure your mother is as comfortable as possible so that she gets to enjoy the best of times she can have. Of course it might be not related to the cancer (and possibly more the result of previous treatments?) and so there might be other things to do.

With my wife's cancer I really struggled until I did a living with less stress course. Finally got a idea on how mindfulness - living for the here and now - can help. The conscious breathing techniques were great for coping with some of the more emotional times - though sometimes a good cry can really help. Transcendental mediation did not really work for me though.

Glad you found us here on the forum and thank you for posting, do post whenever you want and if you need you would be welcome to ring the helpline too.

    <<hugs>>
