Hi,

I am 26, the only child and from a single parent family. My mum got diagnosed in October 2019 with cervical cancer and has now finished treatment. However, I have found that this is effecting me more now than it did to begin with, and I am constantly worrying about her.
I was wondering if there are any other young people who have had similar experience and wanted to chat etc?
Sometimes friends don’t fully understand as they have never been faced with this.

  • Hi and welcome to the community though sorry to hear about you mum and the worry this is causing you.

I held back slightly in answering your post since at 60 I hardly qualify in the young person stakes but perhaps really age does not matter that much at a time like this.

The issue around friends you raise is really common, many people simply cannot handle a conversation around cancer partially because they are anxious they might say the wrong thing but then say nothing and this can add to a sense of loneliness. The online fora here is great in that we all understand and we get that there can be good and bad days. Celebrate every win and on the bad days - we can help pick each other up, dust us down and ready for the next event.

    <<hugs>>

    Hey,

    I hope you're doing well.

I'm 33 and also an only child and feel exactly the same as you do. My Mum was diagnosed with multiple myeloma six years ago, but this is the first time I've reached out for emotional support. I live in London, whereas my parents are near Liverpool, so I feel guilty every day that I'm not there, and should I move back home.

Your message made me feel connected to someone, so thank you. Here if you want a chat! x
