My brother in law has been battling thymus cancer for a year. He has had chemo, radiotherapy and surgery but has now been told they haven't managed to get rid of it all. He has now been told he is terminal. All the family are in shock. How do we deal with this and how do I stay strong whilst supporting my sister?

  • Hi , welcome to the community though sorry to hear about your brother-in-law and what you all have been going through.

From what you say it sounds like they had some success with the treatment and that is good news but they have not managed to get it all. With my wife's cancer we knew it was incurable at the start but her treatment has managed to stop the cancer growing and we are now living with cancer.

While we all want to be strong it is not easy and it is important to look after ourselves to, you might like to look at I'm looking after someone with cancer

I ended up doing a living with less stress course, perhaps the most important lesson being learning to appreciate what we have in the here and now though the controlled breathing exercises can be really useful at times too.

We will do all we can through the power of the website to try to help but if you need to talk you can ring the helpline of use the in your area tool to find support groups near you.

    Hi Steve

Thanks for that. It's so difficult and I appreciate the advice. I guess that's what we have to learn to do, live with the cancer. I'll look into some of the things you have suggested.
