Hi,

3 years ago I lost my grandad to cancer and I struggled to get through it. I have just found out my grandpa has melanoma that has spread to his liver and bones. Due to his age I’m worried that he won’t get the full extent of treatment, despite the fact he is in relatively good health for a 81 year old. I’m just so scared that he will die too.

  • Hi and welcome to the online community

It's natural to feel scared when you've just found out that your grandpa's melanoma has spread especially as you've already lost your grandad to cancer.

You don't need to worry that his age will prevent him from having treatment. Doctors look at someone's overall health and ability to cope with the treatment and side effects rather than how old they are.

Why don't you join us over in the melanoma group where you can ask questions about the treatment he's been offered. There are many people there who have melanoma that has spread and they will be able to share their experiences with you.

To join just click on the link I've created and then choose 'join this group' on the page that opens. You can then introduce yourself or post a question after selecting 'start a discussion' and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

When you have a minute it would be really useful if could pop something about your grandpa's journey so far into your profile as it helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Edit Profile'.
