Hi everyone
My Mum has recently been diagnosed with two different cancers. Firstly she was diagnosed with mouth cancer and told that she could have an operation to remove the tumour but tests have shown that she also has stage 4 lung cancer so an operation is out of the question. Last week we were told that she is terminal, although she can have some radiotherapy on her mouth and possibly chemo on her lungs to give her a bit more time. We are absolutely stunned, particularly as Mum is quite well in herself (apart from her mouth being sore).
Mum has said that she wants to carry on living her life as normal for as long as possible, which is great. But in the back of my mind I know there are going to be some tough times coming. I would be really grateful for some advice around what help and support is available to us when those tough times come.
Thank you.
Hello Newfie lady. Welcome to the community, tho it's a place none of us is really here out of choice.
I suggest you get in touch with the Helpline re help and support for the tough times ahead, on 0808 808 0000 8am to 8pm 7 days a week
Your mum may decide she doesn't want radio or chemotherapy ( due to the side effects), so be prepared for that - especially if she wants to live her life as normally as she can.
Hi.
I’m so sorry to hear of your mums recent diagnosis, it’s something you’re never prepared for and never wish to hear.
My mum has been diagnosed recently with terminal bone cancer, she is undergoing a few different treatments to hopefully try and prolong her life as much as possible. She had breast cancer 4 years ago and this is secondary cancer from that.
I highly recommend speaking with your Macmillan nurse at your local hospital or on the phone, perhaps you and your mum visit them or see if they could do a home visit? I found them very helpful and informative with questions I had, also gave me some great advice on how to help mum with things without her feeling she’s lost her independence.
I hope this has helped, I wish you and your mum all the best.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
