Hello Group! Im new and I'm from the U.S. My best friend is recovering from rectal cancer removal. I'm not sure what the name is. It was through her stomach,  laproscopic  surgery. She is in a lot of pain. She has been having discharge from her anus and vagina. Bad smelling she says. She was told that her ct scan doesnt show a tear, cut hole or anythung but more tests next week. Also her stoma bag will be with her for the rest of her life. Needless to say, she is very emotional and terrified that something worse is really wrong and I dont believe she is being cared for with enough urgency.  As for myself,  I had a routine gall bladder removal also, laprascopically( I'm aware theyre very different) Unfortunately, a duct was cut too short, went up into my liver and was leaking bile inside my chest cavity. I went to the hospital a couple days after my discharge from the hospital telling them the pain never subsided that it had in fact gotten worse. The hospital did tests all day long and eventually admitted me telling me what the Dr did. I had a bag to catch the bile with a tube going into my side. Im needing to know if the Dr she saw is being too lax i  her treatment. If her colon was knicked and she is leaking waste so much that its coming out any way it can, should she go to the emergency room for more urgent treatment? I dont know how to help her. If my hospital treated me with such urgency, why arent they at her Drs? It wasnt even HER surgeon she saw today. Hers is out of town. She hasnt seen this particular Dr before. Is there anything that anyone has experience with or perhaps a professional that can advise me? I really want her to go but she is so emotional right now she cant think straight. Please help me!

Welcome to the online community although we're sorry that you've had to reach out to us from the US.

I am sorry to read that your friend is having such a terrible time but as you may appreciate having rectal surgery is such a big operation and is life changing and like any surgery emotions are very high afterwards.

Whilst I can't comment on the actions of a doctor as I'm not a medical person the only thing I can suggest, which you already know, is that your friend should indeed seek medical attention from either the emergency room or her WOCN at the earliest opportunity.

You can give her some assurance that wearing a stoma bag is not all that bad, it just takes time to come to terms with it and she should look on it as being part of the cure not the cause of the problem and it is 100% better than the alternative, having a bag is better than a box.

I would say however in my opinion that body waste coming out through her anus and vagina could be quite normal and yes the smell can be over whelming at times but her WOCN nurse should be able to advise her and see to her emotions.

You are very welcome to join our Anal cancer forum group and try asking your questions there we also have available an anal surgeon to whom you could ask questions and he can be contacted on (Missing Group) he is very good and should be able to give you a lot of information.

You can post your questions by simply clicking on the green text above which will open up new pages for you and once there you can start a new discussion.

    Hope this helps you.
