Chemotherapy

Hi

I have just completed 12 rounds of Chemotherapy and have had a scan on my small bowel to see how things are progressing.

My arms have got very thin and I assume this is down to the effects of the chemo.

Has this happened to anybody else!!

Thanks

  • Hi Craigavon,

First of all congratulations for completing your chemotherapy regime. I had nearly 7 years ago and my weight went down to 7 stone. I believe it is normal. But have a word with either your nurse or oncologist.

I hope everything is going well for you.

I am awaiting a MRI scan and I get the results on Wednesday and I am very worried. I had a CT scan in April and I was told I had radiation enteritis, however a second radiologist checked the scan and found a shadow. Apparently the hospital wrote me and I apparently cancelled the appointment, which is not true and the gynae doctor didn’t believe me. I am thinking all sorts and if it is “ominous”, I am worrying if it has gotten to big or may have spread. I am terrified

  • Hi Lisa.

    Thank you for your reply.

On Tuesday past I was feeling very poorly. I felt nauseous and I felt very light headed, my nose was bleeding and I felt very weak and very tired but could not sleep and had diarrhea.

I phoned the place where I am getting my chemo so they told me to come in. Bloods were taken and a X ray of my small bowel was taken. The bloods were okay and the X ray showed my small bowel was not blocked as I was worried it was. They gave me cream to put up my nose as apparently chemo can give you scabs on your nostrils which can bleed. I was also given codeine tablets to take with lopermide tablets to stop diaharraha. It did stop on Wednesday but now today it has came back. At times I wish they had admitted me to the ward for further observation.

Today I am also very tired and sleepy but can not sleep. Maybe the codeine tablets I took yesterday have made me sleepy today.

I also got a CT scan last Friday and I am awaiting on the results. I am also like yourself very worried what it will show and what my next treatment may be.

You must have been very weak when you were down to 7 stone!!

I am just over 8 stone now. My normal weight is around 9 stone as I have suffered from Crohn's disease since 1992. I went down to 7.5 stone in 1992.:

I pray that your scan will bring you good results.

  • Hi William,

Thank you for your reply and sorry you are feeling poorly.  I guess chemotherapy does make you better but going through it is something I wouldn’t wish anyone. When I had chemotherapy (7 years ago) I don’t remember much of it because I had sepsis and I was put into a coma. It has left me with pins and needles in my toes which I don’t notice too much. However, the chemotherapy did shrink the tumour and then I had 35 rounds of radiotherapy and 3 lots of brachytherapy.  And my weight is now 11 stone 8 pounds, I sound like heifer, ha, ha, ha,

Your weight is very light but don’t worry about that because when you are feeling up to it you can have a nice, big, scrumptious meal with all the trimmings. I am watching “Celebrity Master Chef” at the moment, which is making me hungry. When I had the operations for my colostomy and urostomy my weight went down to the 5 stone bracket and I had to learn to walk again, which was awful because my weight was low and I didn’t have the strength and my knees wouldn’t lock. I have sinced passed my driving test (first time) and I bought a car.

Maybe the diaharia you experiencing could be down to the Chrones? Or maybe it is roundabout feelings and side efrect of chemotherapy.

I hope and pray your CT scan results are great and I hope and pray for myself too. It is horrible. I am having the MRI scan Saturday morning and as I mentioned before I get the results on Wednesday and I have been crying and worrying. I have been to and fro A&E for 2 years with bowel obstructions and I have had 3 CT scans and each time I ask if there is anything “ominous” and each time I was told no and it’s scar tissue. On the CT scan I had in April the radiologist signed off the CT scan as fine but a second radiologist found a shadow and apparently the hospital wrote to me and apparently I rang them up cancelled, which I didn’t but the gynae doctor I saw on Friday didn’t believe me. I am worrying if it is “ominous” how big is? Or has it spread?. I will let you know how I get on.

    Sending love and good vibes,

  • Hi William,

I hope you are feeling better this morning and had a good nights sleep.

They are all good on Master Chef and Joe’s desserts were beautiful. I was sad for Dion to leave but it was a difficult choice.

I hope you have a better day today.

    Love and good vibes,

  • Hi William ,

I am just checking in with you and I hope you are feeling better and brighter. I have been thinking about you.

I have just come home from the gynae clinic and the bleeding is because my pelvic floor has dropped due to the treatments. I asked the consultant to marry me! Ha, ha, ha.

I thought I would let you know.

Sendiing you love and good vibes,

  • Hi Lisa.

I got a phone call from the doctor today to say I now have a blood clot in my lung. I am already taking clexane injections to thin my blood to avoid blood clots.

I now tomorrow have to go for more chemo but I also have to stay overnight in hospital to have a scan within two hours of taken injection to see if I am on correct dose of clexane injection. And then on top of this there is Covid to worry about.

    Best wishes

    William

  • Hi William ,

Thank you for your reply and I am sorry you have a blood clot on your lung. I had a blood clot in my left thigh when I had major surgery and I treated with Clexane injections. They did try to put me on Warfarin but it constants cinnamon and I makes me feel sick.

I hope your chemotherapy session goes well, if that makes sense and your stay in hospital will brief.

    Sending you get well vibes,

    Lisa

  • Hi Lisa

I am still in hospital. I just got another CT scan today to check are these new or old blood clots. Doctor will not let me out till he sees the result of this CT scan.

I am very tired. Still do not sleep well at night especially on hospital beds.
