My sister and mum have both been diagnosed with breast cancer and I feel totally floored but also pathetic for not coping , what are the best things I can do to help them ? And make myself feel stronger to be there for them ? Does anyone have any suggestions
thank you
Hi Helen47
Welcome to our community, I hope you find it both informative and supportive.
It is often a shock when someone we love gets a cancer diagnosis, having two must be even more overwhelming so I for one do not see you as being pathertic - indeed far from it by reaching out on here.
Someting I found quite helpful was looking at your feelings when someone has cancer as being able to recognize the emotions and accept them as normal and valid I found helped to make them less overwhelming.
Something some cancer patients talk about is wanting to be treated normally as of course they are still the people we love. Peraps the biggest element is listening - what do they want - sometimes it mght be talking about cancer but often all the other things in our lives.
If they want perhaps you could go to appointments with them, it can be helpful to have someone else in the room as it can be easy to miss things.
