Palliative care

Hi, I care for my mum who has throat cancer. She has just completed a short course of palliative radiotherapy to ease the symptoms, and doesnt see the consultant now until February.

We do not know how long she has.

The past 2-3 days she has been in terrible pain with nausea, weakness and dizziness.

She was prescribed co-codamol yesterday but she is feeling dreadful on it. She can hardly eat due to pain and nausea, and is struggling to take all her medications. She is quite muddled.

I am struggling to cope, have hardly seen my family the last few days and am now needing to stay overnight for her safety. I would never leave her like this, it is so very sad. But my children also need me:(

Where can I get help? Who would provide it? Who would refer her?

  • Hi so sorry

that seems completely unacceptable to be left on your own till February no less

I can only only suggest what I’ve found today

local McMillan support centre within your nearest hospital that should be drop in or call to speak to them

other than that the PALS team at the hospital

    patient liaison

my mums been discharged from acute ward admitted to on Friday 19th Dec with a letter from gp after ext concerning blood results within 24hts of test

which took nearly two weeks to even be taken adter intermittent ongoing appointments with random gps at her practice all allowing only one topic of complaint per appt even though her symptoms have been ongoing for over a year and worsening and had liver resection in 2016 discharged from scans etc Im 2022 and other complications they have failed to address or follow through with promises to pass on to consultants etc

her kidney was basically failing Last week calcium dangerous etc

scan founds inoperable liver cancer and nodules in abdomen

We were told misinformation wrong info abt moving hospitals , waited three days for eventual meetmng of consultants via zoom with her excellent prior consultant who unfortunately we don’t even know if is her now consultant no matter how many ways and times asked for info

on day of discharge a doctor was meant to come discuss meeting postponed from Monday 22nd  to Wednesday 24th December

she was given discharge papers on her own late morning as I was on way and her partner had to get his car from home to take her home

paragraph on liver and abdomen / no contact details for medic supposed to have in charge for every patient case etc

told she could go home and someone would be in touch in the new year

left with a bloody cannula in at the point of  making sure she’d packed ev which was left until I pointed it out obviously assumed they were going to do it

then after asking what abt the meeting I’d consultants why haven’t they been etc a head nurse mum hadn’t met with a computer in big trolley came reasking if a doctor had talked to her abt meeting

on saying no again she said well your going home and it’s going to be supportive care focused now not treatment

In  less than three minutes she was gone

I followed her to confirm her meaning meant there was nothing they could do and was told by her she didn’t want to just tell my muu u m that was it as my mum didn’t want to hear it and it’s Christmas and to enjoy these next days but clarified with a smile that she wasn’t saying that was the time left

    that was it

    no plan

    no information

    no help contacts

So I’ve chased it up today best I could with no returned calls and the only thing I found that might be of use is what I’ve said above

    however McMillan are for support

PALS IS PROBABLY MOST LIKELY TO BE ABLE TO GIVE YOU SOME VALIDATING CONTACT INFORMATION

So sorry for you I hope you get the Supprt information and respect you both deserve

  • Does your mum have a palliative nurse or district nurses that come to your home.? If so they should have given you a contact no to call. If you havent got a palliative nurse ask to be referred asap. You dont need to be on end of life care to be referred. They can prescribe various meds to help with symptoms. My husband was referred to them by the district nurses before we knew he was terminal. She chopped & changed his prescriptions until we found the right combination of drugs to ease his pain & symptoms.

  • I am so very sorry to hear your experience. It's so very hard seeing your mum like this isn't it.

Thank you for taking the time to write a response. I will call Macmillan in the morning.

    Best wishes x

  • Hello. No she doesnt have any palliative support arranged, but I shall call the Cancer centre monday and ask for a referral as soon as possible.

Thank you for this advice, its very much appreciated.

    Best wishes xx
