My wife has been for tests

It's her second visit to the breast clinic after being given a negative result last year after an unusual lump in her breast appeared following the start of HRT. The advice given was that it happens sometimes and nothing to worry about.

With that in her head she has kept quiet about the development of this lump which became basically a rock hard breast. Upon revisiting the clinic they have biopsied her breast and her lymph nodes, but she has been told it is most likely cancer and has spoken to the specialist nursing team. We are awaiting results which are 2 weeks away and her apetite has withered, her sleep (usually so important) is minimal and her anxiety (which she was suffering from already before hrt) has increased exponentially as she has been told to come off hrt as well.

She is holding it together in front of our kids and her parents, but I am concerned that her sleep and apetite and anxiety will affect her health and further weaken her immune system, which, because of a disorder she has been taking drugs to suppress for years now.

I'm quick to this forum as I was hoping to hear about some coping mechanisms, best diets and sleep regimes under these circumstances, if anyone has suggestions I would be grateful to hear them.

  • Hi

Sorry to hear about your wife, I think just about everyone on here recognizes the pain of being in the limbo between tests and getting results though sometimes getting results extra quickly can be even more worrying.

There is a booklet you can download on health eating and cancer here

There is also a page about insomnia that has some tips here though it is worth noting that different things work better for different people. I did a living with less stress course that helped me mostly to try to keep my focus in the here and try to make the best of every day.

  • Thank you Steve, much appreciated.

  • As a breast cancer survivor I had similar issues when I was diagnosed. I slept terribly and I really didn't want to eat food but one thing that did help was drink supplements and my OH became an expert in making smoothies for me which I found so much easier to tolerate when I had no appetite and even though not great for long term it at least give me nourishment when I didn’t want to eat.

As for sleeping, I didn’t sleep much as night when it was dark and quiet but ended up napping as and when I needed to, the nights were the hardest for me.

  • Rizzle thanks very much for your feeback. Smoothies are a great idea, we only have one more day to wait until we find out, then hopefully the anxiety she is feeling may abate a little. We have a mean smoothie recipe, but I'll have to find some more.
