One step forward two steps backwards

I feel so frustrated today as once again my husband’s treatment cycle has been cancelled due to blood results. His first cycle (July) went okay and then his second cycle was cancelled due to very high liver enzymes! Fast forward to October and he finally got his second cycle, but once again his liver enzymes were elevated luckily his oncologist said he could have the third cycle with weekly blood tests to follow. Liver enzymes still slightly high but we were told if they didn’t get any higher he should be okay for fourth cycle. Today however we’ve had a phone call as his white blood cell count is too low and Thursday’s treatment is cancelled until his bloods show improvement. It just seems so unlucky that in the six months since his diagnosis he’s only had three cycles. I know the doctors snd nurses only cancel or postpone treatment if absolutely necessary to save him getting infection etc but I hate this “yes/no” stuff. He’s got stage 4 lung cancer so the treatment isn’t a cure but I worry that he’s not even getting a good chance of slowing the cancer.

  • Hi Grasan

Sorry or the delay in responding here, I am sorry to read that your husband is on palliative care for stage 4 lung cancer and due to high liver enzymes he had his treatment cancelled all be it temporarily.  I understand the concern this causes, especially as the fear of what the delays in treatment may mean.

Has your husband asked what course of action he can take in between treatments to reduce the elevation? I am not clued up enough on liver enzymes to give any advice, but I didn't want your post to go unanswered, and I am hoping that his next treatment has now been scheduled ?

  • Thanks for your kind message. He has an appointment for 30th December, bloods on 28th and obviously treatment is dependent on his bloods coming back okay.
How is your husband doing? Has he had the result from the lung swab?
Like yourselves we try to stay positive and now we are over the initial disappointment of yet another cycle of treatment postponed we are focusing on having a lovely family Christmas and then a CT scan and consultant video call on 4th January.
