Hi all, thanks for having me. I’m taking my lovely mum for her first chemo on Monday, she has stage 2 breast cancer and is having 7 rounds of chemo(  4 of one type 3 of another). She is 72, hospital are happy to proceed because she is fit and healthy thankfully. I am apprehensive for the first session, I am collecting her at about 9 at night as her appointment not until 3.30 in the afternoon. What should be expected from that first night? Will she be ill or fine, what can we expect from the following days /week. I’m her main carer so want to be as prepared as possible if I can. She is having Herceptin and docetaxel

thank you

  • Hi and welcome to our community, though sorry to hear about your mum.

My wife's cancer is quite different but I was surprised at how friendly and chatty her chemotherapy unit was. Her drugs were different too but there is generally a fairly common theme of keeping an eye out for a fever as that may need more direct support by the hospital.

It might help to look at posts in our Breast cancer forum - they are a really friendly bunch and I am sure will be happy to try to answer some of your questions.

    <<hugs>>

    Thank you Blush

  • Hi.

Firstly I will say to you is that your mum is in the same position my mum was in 19 years ago and she is still fighting fit. For her the chemo was three weekly and during the middle week she would feel sick and tired but was always fine straight after the treatment. The symptoms can tend to build as the treatments go on but I also know (from my husband having chemo) that the anti sickness drugs are much better now. I remember my mum getting quite a lot of mouth ulcers and the hospital recommended this. It’s so good that I have kept a bottle of it in ever since. Everyone can react differently to chemo but your mum should be given some info at her appt so try not to worry too much. Hope it all goes well for you.
