Hi all, my wife has stage 4 esophgael cancer which has spread to lymph nodes and liver. After 6 months of chemo the cancer is described as stable but is treatable but not curable. She is having 3 monthly scans and I'm currently waiting on her outside the cancer centre at Guys while she is having her CT scan and consultation. Due to covid restrictions I'm not allowed to accompany her. Like most of us I'm finding the caring so sad and I'm emotionally drained but I try to keep positive and not show my feelings. My wife doesn't like discussing her cancer and tends to 'park' it and she wraps herself up in day to day stuff. I've heard reference to a 'living with stress' course with positive feedback. Does anyone know where I can obtain information about this course ? Thanks.
Steve
Hi Steve,
If you send me a friend request here, so that we can private message each other, I can let you know of some supports and tools I know, have experienced as a carer myself, and am offering myself for carers.
I think it is a good idea to do something to help and support yourself during this time.
We need it as carers.
Lots of love
Mel
I don't like the term "moving on" because it sounds to me like we are leaving our loved ones and the life we had with them behind. I like the term "moving forward" as it implies that, while life goes on, our loved ones are still with us in our hearts and minds.
Hi Steve, the less stress course I did was arranged by Maggies.
One of the key lessons I learnt was about living in the here and now because truly none of us can be sure what tomorrow holds - I was worrying about how I would cope without my wife and not really enjoying the time we had together.
Another useful skill was conscious breathing, when things seem overwhelming tp step back and take control of my breathing before coming forward again is helpful, but it was also a useful skill for relaxing too. I downloaded a programme on my phone chill panda that has some exercises that can be helpful.
Transcendental meditation though just made me laugh.
<<hugs>>

Thanks for responding, some useful information. We dont get the scan results until the 8th June so as most people on this site have experienced we have the anxious wait. I fully understand the mental benefits of living in the heart and now but it's so easy for thoughts to drift in a negative direction. Thanks again.
