Husband is having chemo for colorectal cancer and has hit the stage of losing his sense of taste. We love to cook: really love it. Great food with nice wine is our Thing. So this hits hard. His appetite is still OK, so I do want decent meals that we can both enjoy.
Are there any flavours that work better than others? A spicy jambalaya worked well last night (though he gave up on the red wine), while a parmesan-laden chicken risotto earlier in the week was apparently tasteless.
Seeking food/diet advice seems to find lists of single ingredients to avoid, but no constructive suggestions for actual meals.
Can anyone help please?
Thanks
Hi - sorry to hear about your husband and glad to hear you are trying different recipes; often of course people find their tastes evolve all the time so one day a favourite is the next week tasteless and it can be very variable - not that that helps much.
What I can perhaps point at is the booklet Recipes for people affected by cancer and of course the plus for the cancer patient is they can eat lots of food that might be considered "naughty" - not so helpful sometimes for the carer of course - and visiting in hospital the snatched food on the run is so healthy!
Love the username - I am a science husband in Oxfordshire but was born at the RAF Hospital in Ely.

Hi ScienceWifeInCambs,
Have a look at (+) Recipes for Carers - Macmillan Online Community
These are some recipes I used whilst caring for my late wife. They're all easy to make, generally use the minimum of pots and pans (so it's easier for the carer to clean up afterwards), nutritious and easily modified.
Please bear in mind that your husbands dietary requirements may necessitate changing some things around (if he requires higher fibre, higher calorie intake, etc.).
Also, don't forget to discuss his dietary requirements with your doctors. As much as either of you may want to eat X, Y or Z, X, Y or Z may not be what he needs to eat.
Hope these help.
Peace,
Ewen :-)
P.S. The Tuna 4-in-1 recipe is very handy as multiple meals can be made out of one batch of ingredients.
Hi ScienceWifeInCan,
My husband has been on chemo 1 year now and his tongue has black spots on it from chemo therefore his tastebuds have changed and it still changes on a daily basis. We end up wasting food because it really is trial and error. He can taste Chicken Jalfrezzi because of the chili peppers in it. He also does well with pan fried chicken, mushrooms, sweet peppers with lots of seasoning.
He is now diabetic so mainly eats chicken, fish, with veg dishes. Tuna is out because he has a metal taste in his mouth. Sparkling water at room temperature and chewing gum helps make the metal taste in his mouth more bearable. Sugar free hard candies also help.
Not sure if this helps you, but thought I'd pass on a few tips that works for him. I know it is really hard especially when you love food. My husband has lost 12 kg because he just doesn't enjoy food anymore. Wishing you the very best.
My wife hit something similar. The thing that did work was "Eat Dessert First". I've been making things with loads of cream and things with caramel sauce.
Even if someone can't taste texture helps.
