hi all,

my mum was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer this week but with not stage/prognosis yet. It is very worrying and I feel so many feelings already I wonder how I'll cope over the coming months. Any else find the diagnosis part one of the worst bits? i don't know if that question is ok. I suppose i just want to share this with people who have lived it. I'm so tired already as i struggle to sleep. Concentrating at work which is a stressful job anyway is very hard.

Thanks for any kindness and thoughts. J

hi Jessie - sorry to hear you are both going through this.  My husband was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last summer.  The waiting between the appointments was awful - it was a routine op, then cancer, possibly bowel, then not bowel, possibly pancreatic, then waiting to see specialist.  I now understand it wasn't that long and they ran all sorts of tests to get full info for the consultant meeting.  Once we had the consultant meeting, it was full steam ahead with treatment - we were given options and time and never felt rushed.

You will find the strength to deal with this.  My practical suggestion is buy a diary (with room to write, not a pocket one) to note all the timings of medications and appointments (if you are going down the treatment route) - we cannot remember what we had for breakfast let alone when meds where taken when!  If you have people you can call on, call on them.  If people offer to help, let them.  A group of our friends have organised a food rota and we get dinners delivered twice a week (our children are teenagers and can help too).

I hope your work will be understanding (mine have been fantastic).  I too am tired a lot, but you'll figure out what is important and what isn't (housework not so much for me! only when absolutely necessary or I need to keep busy!). Best wishes for what lies ahead.
