My son has had his first CT scan post treatment, (chemo, surgery, radiotherapy) which was clear. However they say that he won' be designated NED unless the second scan in 6 month's time is also clear. Anyone know why this is?
Hi Ma78
I had a different cancer but did have a lot of radiotherapy. Typically radiotherapy continues to work in the body beyond the end of the treatment, and early scans might not give the true picture of how it has worked.
It is very common for a follow up scan to be done, often in a further six months to check everything again and many people find that they can then be declared NED. It’s really good news that your son received a good result from his first scan, and hopefully he will get NED status with the next one. Try not to worry too much meantime, although I appreciate this is difficult for you. Focus on the fact that this first scan has had a very good result.
