Hi,

I’m a newbie and just been diagnosed with the above at the ripe age of 42 years old. In the results meeting they advised me to go for complete removal of my prostate and mentioned the other option is radio therapy. I’ve taken the news better than I expected however it appears to be a minefield in terms of making a decision. I’ve got three kids and happy with what I have. My concern is longevity, quality of life and understanding the downsides to both removal and radiotherapy. Including recovery.

I am hoping the community can offer me an insight into the above.

thanks

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

It's always difficult when you're given treatment choices so can I recommend that you join the prostate cancer forum which is a great place to ask questions and share experiences with others who have a similar diagnosis to you.

To join, just click on the link I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

It would be great if you could put something about your diagnosis into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Weezie are you still active in chat, same position here just a little older..

  • Hi, I saw your msg it’s my first time on the chat for a long while. Hope you’re doing okay. Had operation in December and slowly getting back to normalcy.

  • Thanks for getting back to me, glad you are managing and normality is just around the corner for you. PC is a tuff one, it seems that we all suffer in silence because I have found it difficult finding someone or a group of guys who want to chat about this, have a bit of banter and talk stuff through, plus keeping positive about it. Next week I start radiotherapy, once a week for six weeks but I am still unsure if it's the best decision. Anyways glad to hear your recovery is on track, stay chirpy.

  • The hardest part was deciding on which path to take. I had a convo with the radiotheropist that convo had the biggest impact on my decision to have surgery. He was the same age as me 42 and had a family of three. He advised if he was in my shoes he’ll go for surgery. Due to I could always go for it if needed after surgery however if I went the other route the operation would be off the table. In addition to the effects of surgery didn’t impact internal organs now or later down the line. Obvs I want longevity without the option of potential impact or later effects on the body. I think I’ve done okay since December bloods are clear health is getting better obvs issues with erections but it’s improving and my bladder is back to normal however I wear pads when I go gym. I’m here if you more info or a further insight
