Are you having trouble sleeping?

Sleep problems may be caused by how you’re feeling emotionally, or as part of the side effects for cancer treatment. If you find it hard to have a good sleep, you’re not alone. The Online Community is here to support you 24/7.

“Getting a cancer diagnosis is extremely stressful, and that brings a whole load of emotions, and lack of sleep certainly does not help. I think many of us have periods of insomnia. I experienced a long period of not sleeping. I could go off to sleep quite quickly, but after an hour I would find myself wide awake again, and would spend the rest of the night getting frustrated because I couldn't sleep."

  • Hi I'm NickB2 and was diagnosed with bowel cancer which was successfully operated with all known cancer removed. There was however an unrelated mark showing on my right lung. Biopsy was carried out and yesterday I was informed it is lung cancer, but the good news is that it is 1st stage and not affected any nodes. Hopefully I will receive surgery at Guys Hospital, London soon to remove the tumor. Seeing Oncology on Tuesday next week. I have to say the support I have received from the start from Surgeons, EDGH(Eastbourne), Conquest (Hastings), staff and nurses throughout and Macmillan nurses has been outstanding. It has made such a huge difference to trying to come to terms with this horrible illness. I'm putting my trust in all the teams to get through this awful time in our lives including my dear wife Diane. Bless you all. Yes, sleepless nights!!

  • Hi Nick and welcome to our community.

I'm sorry to hear about your rotten luck, twice, but it's heartening to know that you've got great teams behind you who will do their utmost to make you well.  Guys has an impressive pedigree, so you'll be in good hands.  But the worry is always present, so I'm not surprised your sleep's affected.  My excuse is I just don't seem to need that much, and my dad was just the same.  How's Diane coping, having to face it again?

    Gill xx

  • Thank you Gill for your kind reply. I have never been a great sleeper so understand where you're coming from. Thankyou for asking, Diane has been "a rock" for me and us, having been in the nursing sector with the fantastic NHS herself many years.

    Thanks again Gill

  • You're welcome, and what a great bonus that Diane has a nursing background; she must be a fantastic carer for yourself.  I'm my fella's carer and had no experience whatsoever, until last December and then I had to learn, fast!  There's a fair old bit to do, as he had a total laryngectomy and can't make any sounds yet, but once we get on top of his lymphoedema and mucous issues, he'll be able to start practicing with his electrolarynx.

Boy, I never thought I'd get there, but it's all become second nature now.  I imagine Diane would have cracked it from the start Thumbsup xx
