Are you having trouble sleeping?

Sleep problems may be caused by how you’re feeling emotionally, or as part of the side effects for cancer treatment. If you find it hard to have a good sleep, you’re not alone. The Online Community is here to support you 24/7.

“Getting a cancer diagnosis is extremely stressful, and that brings a whole load of emotions, and lack of sleep certainly does not help. I think many of us have periods of insomnia. I experienced a long period of not sleeping. I could go off to sleep quite quickly, but after an hour I would find myself wide awake again, and would spend the rest of the night getting frustrated because I couldn't sleep."

  • I am having trouble trying to connect with people who may be awake.  Don’t know what I’m doing wrong

  • Hi Sheelagh

I’m awake and have been since 5am which is fairly typical for me. I don’t think you are doing anything wrong, but people like me who are awake might just not be posting-I’ve been reading the news online for example. Sometimes the chat on here can be busier than others so it can just ebb and flow but there are probably plenty people around. Are you ok today?

  • I just can’t connect.

  • What do you mean exactly Sheelagh? Are you having any problems navigating the forums or is it just that there was no-one posting here when you were looking to chat?

  • Having trouble navigating.  Getting so annoyed with myself

  • It can be difficult when you’re new here to find your way around, so I can understand your frustration but you’ll get there the more you use it.

When you click on your name, you’ll see what groups you have joined and just clicking on one of those groups takes you straight to it. There is a tab on your own page at the top called “activity” and if you click on that it will list all the posts you've already made.

When you come to this group, look for a black arrow at the bottom of the page-there is one on the left and one on the right. On the left it takes you right back to the beginning of the chat so can read through earlier posts.

I’ll put a link here about managing your account which might be helpful for you.

  • Morning Sheelagh.

I've just read your posts as I've actually been asleep by some miracle!  So sorry you've been in limbo waiting for replies but I'm fully awake now, so can get in gear.

As you said, the waiting's almost over and when tomorrow comes (fingers so tightly crossed for you) then you'll know properly and be able to start making plans.  Have you got someone to go with you?  It will help if you do as they'll provide another pair of ears to take in information if you don't remember everything.  Also, ask questions and have a pen ready to write down all the things you deem salient.  I'm sure you already know all this but sometimes, in the moment, your mind can go off at a tangent.  Mine certainly did when attending appointments with my fella and afterwards I'd struggle to remember everything. (Damn, where was that pen?!)

What are your plans for today if you don't mind me asking?  I hope you'll have company and hopefully someone you can talk to about your understandable concerns.

We've got an appointment this afternoon but I'll keep checking here and reply if you need us.

Keep going love - you're doing great!

    Love Gill xx

  • Hi Gill-good to see you got some sleep last night. It seems my eyes ping open at 5am or shortly before and I can never usually nod off again!

Good advice there for Sheelagh-I found I went into a fight or flight mode when I was first diagnosed and just wanted out of the room! It was hard to take things in and remember what was said, so I took my partner in to every single appointment after that and what a difference another pair of ears makes.

Hope your appointment goes well this afternoon-I have some appointments stacking up already for when I come home from my hols-it never seems to stop. But I’m not going to think about them till it’s time.

  • Morning Shelagh, like Gill I actually managed to get some sleep last night. It’s about 1 in 4 but I am happy when it does happen.

Sorry to hear you are having problems navigating, sometimes the site goes down overnight as they’re having problems or taking it down trying to sort problems out.  I thought I’d been shut off the site last week as I had no updates on any of the threads I am following, spoke to the MODS and they confirmed they’d had ‘technical difficulties’.

Wishing you all the luck in the world for tomorrow … if I’m awake and the site is Co-operating I will check in overnight.

Hugs and positive vibes being sent your way.
