Awake and up all night

Are you having trouble sleeping?

Sleep problems may be caused by how you’re feeling emotionally, or as part of the side effects for cancer treatment. If you find it hard to have a good sleep, you’re not alone. The Online Community is here to support you 24/7.

“Getting a cancer diagnosis is extremely stressful, and that brings a whole load of emotions, and lack of sleep certainly does not help. I think many of us have periods of insomnia. I experienced a long period of not sleeping. I could go off to sleep quite quickly, but after an hour I would find myself wide awake again, and would spend the rest of the night getting frustrated because I couldn't sleep."

  • Morning Clare, and no worries about replying, although staring at the ceiling all that time wasn't great.

Aw I'm glad you've got family with you and so pleased your outlook is good.  My eldest grandson, 21, also has autism but he's so lovely and completely without guile.  Aye, my mam was a trooper all right, and lived a further eight years after her diagnosis; a stroke, and old age, got her in the end but we still miss her, naturally.

I should have mentioned that this thread is open all day long to everyone, and you'll make lovely new friends here.  We're a very happy, and sometimes silly, bunch so drop by anytime for a chat.  And yes, I did get some sleep but without studying the ceiling! Grin

    Take care lovely xxx

  • Morning Dizzy and a warm welcome from me, too.  Sorry to hear you're struggling with sleeping, but Eddie's given you some great advice to hopefully get to grips with it.  Call in at any time, and you'll find someone here for a chat with...we never shut up shop.

Lovely to meet you and take care of yourself  xxx

  • Morning all, and a welcome from me to our new chatters Westy and Dizzy.

Gill is right-this group never shuts and is there through the night and the day for anyone who’s around and wants to chat.

I’ve had a very deep sleep but was dreaming about a big bag of sweeties for some reason! In my dream I could actually taste them, and I obviously dream in colour as they were very vivid.

I’m still tired after our day yesterday and feeling a bit sluggish after not eating my usual type of food. Guess I’m paying the price now, but will be better focused today. Nothing planned except a bit of housework here so nothing interesting to report.

  • Morning Sarah.

Hey, I dream a lot and always in glorious technicolour.  Now your dream about sweets was probably inspired by our sweetie discussion last week, and it got me thinking.  Do you remember liquorice sticks, the woody twigs that could be chewed on for hours till all the delicious juices had been drained?  I wonder if they'd be acceptable for diabetics, as a way to salve an occasional sweet craving?  A few things though; they might only be available on line now, they could be bad for sugar levels and you might hate them!  Just a probably crackpot suggestion to a fellow sweet addict.

Glad you caught up with some rest, but don't exert with the housework.  Hugs xxx

  • Gill, I LOVE liquorice and always have but it’s off the list now for me, along with so many other lovely things. All I eat if I crave something sweet is some sugar free jelly, and once a week one square of good quality dark chocolate. I can see a bag of Quality Street in my line of vision that we also won in the raffle on Sunday and I’m going to have to move it out of here!

  • Awww flip Sarah.  That's a real shame, especially about the liquorice.  I was just hoping, that in its natural form, it wouldn't be off the menu.  I really hope you'll get satisfaction from what you are allowed, and hopefully Eddie's cheesecake suggestion won't break too many laws.

Have a lovely day lass xxx

  • It’s a nuisance having so much off the list.. I unfortunately also have CKD (chronic kidney disease) which to be fair I haven’t paid as much attention to as I should, but was reading that it brings a load of new eating and drinking challenges I was unaware of.

Sometimes it’s hard to know what to do for the best but I’ve changed to Almond milk from semi-skimmed so at least I’ve made one step! And I get some liquorice taste from drinking liquorice tea though it’s not something that actively helps diabetes.

I’ll end up drinking water only and eating dust at this rate if I believe everything I’m told! I’m sure moderation in all things is quite sensible, so that will be my way to go. And I need to try Eddie’s cheesecake recipe..

  • Bonjour from Northern France. I slept well on our first night after a lovely Cognac and a couple of glasses of wine, one of which was in a local bar and only cost €2!

  • Hello Judith Chalmers - wish we were there.

It's sounding great Helen, and hope the weather's staying kind to you. Keep giving us the odd update on your travels when you can.  Enjoy!  A bientot Mon amie xxx

  • Hi Sarah. You poor love, and the endless restrictions on what you can and can't eat must be a major pain in the derriere.  (Just brushing up on my limited French for Helen.)

I got a carton of almond milk the other week and found it really nice, especially on cereals.  I've not come across liquorice tea but know for a fact I'd enjoy it.  Anything that tastes of that, ginger or anniseed is a must, and the spicier the better!

I'm in total agreement about everything in moderation; I just can't moderate myself and go overboard.  It does make me wonder though - how many of those that pontificate to others the dire consequences of enjoying something, would adhere to their own dogmatic approach themselves?  Thinking Hmmm...
