BRCA2 - Decisions about preventive mastectomy

Hi and help!

I found out I had brca2 mutation last year by chance and since then have been on a bit of a journey. I have now had my ovaries and tubes removed which was a total no-brainer for me as I’m 52 and have had my family.
I then spent 6 months mulling over the mastectomy options and thought I’d made my mind up to do it. Then saw the surgeon last week and it felt to me like they didn’t see it as overly necessary. I was told my lifetime risk is 35% and they don’t consider it under 30%. Many people have much higher risk and because I have brca2, if I get cancer it’s more likely going to be hormone fed and so more easily treated.
Now i’m feeling that I was being overly dramatic and wasting everyone’s time. They did go on to explain the surgical options but by then I felt a bit of a fraud.
Has anyone else got similar circumstances and have a ‘low’ risk based on the statistics? What have you all done??

Thanks

  • Hi

I am sorry that you have not yet had a reply to your post but sometimes it can take a little longer for someone in the same position to see it and respond. In the meantime by me replying it will bump your post so it is seen.

I am sorry to hear that you were found to have the brca2 mutation last year.

You are not being overly dramatic or wasting anyone's time. You are trying to make a difficult but informed decision about have a surgery. it is right to take the time to consider these things.

I wonder if it would be worth giving the Support Line a call and talking things through with one of the nurses. They would be able to talk you through it all and answer any questions.
