BRCA2 Risk Reducing Surgery - Recovery Times

Morning all!

So I went for an appointment with my breast surgeon yesterday, and he has confirmed that my BRCA2 risk reducing surgery will take place Thursday 4th September (with a warning it may get moved if they have an influx of breast cancer patients, which is understandable!)

I'm going for the nipple sparing mastectomy with implants and having both sides done at the same time. And he's going straight for regular implants, as opposed to expanders etc.

I was just wondering what people's experiences are of recovery? My mum had the same surgery but had necrosis of the nipple so her recovery was slightly longer. I'm office-based so I am guessing that, as my work rarely involves heavy lifting, I will be looking at the standard 4-6 weeks assuming I don't have any complications?

  • Hi Wolvensam welcome to the forum and I am sorry that you have not had a reply as yet. Whilst I did have Breast Cancer? I didn't have a Mastectomy nor require implants so can't offer any useful help at this point. However, by my replying it will pop it into the top of the breast cancer thread and someone will be along soon to offer up some information and support for you. Best Wishes for now Gail x

  • Hi Wolvensam

I am BRACA2 and had opted for surveillance. I then was diagnosed with breast cancer.  I has a double mastectomy with immediate breast reconstruction using implants. All went well.  The drains were the biggest challenge and it was great when they were removed.  The physiotherapist gave me exercises and I was advised to massage my breasts and use E45 on them.

4 to 6 weeks sounds reasonable given you are clear of cancer.

    All the very best
