Life Insurance & BRCA1

Hi there,

I've scrolled through lots of forums to try and find some guidance on this but I've not had any luck.

I'm in the process of buying a home and as such my husband and I are looking to get life insurance. I was diagnosed with the BRCA1 alteration in May 2024 and since then have had countless appointments for screening, surgery consultations etc. I'm currently getting annual MRIs (for breast) and quarterly bloods and ultrasound (for ovaries). I'm also on the waitlist for a preventative double mastectomy.

Although I don't need to declare the alteration, I did have to declare that I've seen specialists, had an MRI, blood tests etc and why I needed those...so I did end up having to declare the alteration. Today I was notified by the insurer that they will not cover me due to being on the waitlist for surgery 'where tissue is being removed from the body' and they will only reconsider after the surgery is complete.

Following this I had a call confirming my surgery date which was much sooner than expected so I've actually taken a step back and am no longer on the waitlist until a time when I feel ready.

Needless to say it has been an emotional day. I'm curious to know if anyone else has any experience with getting life insurance post BRCA diagnosis, pre or post surgery. Do I need to declare screening scans and tests due to having the alteration since the law states the alteration doesn't need to be declared itself? Are there any insurers that anyone can recommend or had a good experience with?

Currently feeling very sorry for my uninsurable self....

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

It sounds like a very frustrating position you find yourself in and I hope someone can point you in the right direction soon.
