BRCA and weight loss

Hi, this is my first post here.

I got diagnosed with a BRCA2 mutation in September. I wasn't aware of any history of the gene because I didn't know the half of my family that it came from so the process has been quite overwhelming.

My question is, have any of you considered losing weight after your diagnosis? I have a history of Anorexia but I'm now currently 'overweight' according to bmi. It feels like a minefield but my anxiety is really high and I'm struggling with the uncertainty as someone who is nowhere near ready for surgery. I don't even know if losing weight would do anything or if I'm just clutching at straws.

I'd be interested in anyone else going though anything similar. Particularly if anyone has any thoughts on balancing mental and physical health?

Thanks

  • Hi Qawse welcome to the forum. It always amazes me that a bmi becomes a marker if we are overweight or not. It is purely a marker and the evidence for its use is currently in question. What has driven you to consider weight loss in the first instance? I would be concerned at you attempting to lose weight on your own having suffered from Anorexia previously and as you say yourself highly anxiousHeart I really believe that you need to have a chat with your GP or your Mental Health team if you are still in touch with them and get some maybe Counselling support or just talking to someone re how yoHeart are feeling. I think you may be clutching at straws as a response to this shock news but just take some time to let it all come together Heart️ and consider giving the GP a call. Xxx

  • Hi Gail,

Thankyou so much for your reply, it's really made me think. I think weight feels like my go to because of my history but it's also the only thing I feel like I could do something about, even if its futile.

I think you're right and I need to reach out for support.  I appreciate your honest and kind response.

    Xx
