2021 on the Online Community

4 minute read time.

A blue sky with trees in front of it.

In the spirit of the new year, we’re looking back at what’s happened on the Online Community over the past year.  It’s been a challenging year for many with continued uncertainty around the coronavirus pandemic and the impact this has on cancer patients and their loved ones.

What has helped a lot of people get through is talking to others who can understand how you may be feeling here on the Online Community.

We’ve welcomed around 21,901 new members since the start of 2021 and we’ve seen  161,844 posts, comments and blogs.

There’s a lot of support to be accessed here on the Community and we hope all our new and existing members find it helpful to have a safe and supportive space to share personal experiences and offer support each other.

"Thanks so much, I totally appreciate all the support I have had from joining this forum it has helped me greatly knowing that I am not alone xxx"

“This forum is a lifeline and keeps me sane, Thanks to every contributor as they have all helped on the journey.”

"You can't believe how much your response has helped me as I was lost in imagining worse scenarios etc. I now feel more hopeful and more ready to take the challenges ahead."

"I just want to say a big thank you to this forum as you really helped me through the recovery after my last operation. Your support has meant such a lot to me and I know with your help I’ll get through this one too."

Have you seen our new Welcome video?

A few months ago, we released our new welcome video to help new and existing members find the right support for them here on the Community. There’s lots of different ways to access support on the Community, and the video helps explain.

The short video (1:42 minutes) can be found in the private message you receive from the Moderator account, or it' can be seen in our Technical help section.

Our amazing Community Champions

We’d like to take the opportunity to say a huge thank you to all of our volunteers who dedicate their time to supporting people affected by cancer. This year, we had 8 new Community Champion volunteers join the team:

Lowedal, Wee me, Vulval cancer warrior, MrsBJH, Irishgirl16, God Willing, Juicestool and Daisy53.

We hope you’ll join us in saying thank you to them and all our volunteers for helping everyone here in the Online Community in 2021. If you want to know more about the role of a Community Champion, you can read our ‘Here’s to our Champions’ blog.

You may have spotted the Online Community adverts

Earlier this year, we launched a new advertising campaign that you may have seen on social media. The aim of the new campaign was to help more people who’ve been diagnosed with cancer and supporting loved ones find peer support here on the Community.

Introducing Community Badges

Green Macmillan pin badges

Our Community badges are not only a new way for our members to quickly identify the Community team, and our Community Champions, but also a way to celebrate you and the amazing support you provide each and every day on the Community.

We have three badges which we are going to be launching, and we wanted to tell you more about each of these badges below.

There’s more information in the ‘Introducing Community badges’ blog if you’d like to know more.

Do you read our Community news blogs?

The News section of the Community shares member’s experiences, updates and useful support information. This year the Online Community team published 108 blogs. You may have noticed that we’ve updated the Community news blog page to help you find the content you are looking for.

We love hearing what content our members like to see in our Community news blog. If there’s any topic you’d like us to publish in our content, please do let us know in the comment box at the bottom of this page, or email community@macmillan.org.uk.

Alongside telling us what content you'd like to see published next year in the Community news blog, we'd also love to hear how you've found or offered support to others here on the  Online Community. Maybe you've started your own blog or have been following someone else's? Have you started a discussion thread about a certain topic and it's provided lots of support to others? If so, please do let us know in the Comment box below.

  • I would like to chat to anyone from the north east about side effects of this condition

  • Hi Debbie123

It’s Megan here from Macmillan’s Online Community team. I hope reading the above blog gave you an understanding of how you can access support here. We hope you will find the Community to be a comforting source of support to you as we see every day how helpful it can be to speak to others with similar experiences.

With you asking to speak with others about the side effects of this condition, I’m not sure if you meant to post in one of our Community groups. From looking at your profile I can see that you’ve joined the Neuroendocrine cancer forum.

If you’d like to post in this group, you can do so by clicking the ‘+new’ or ‘+’ button near the group title. I’ll add an image below to help explain.

There’s also lots of different groups you can post in as they are safe and supportive spaces to ask questions, chat to others and give support back. Please do take a look at our other Community groups as you’re welcome to join the ones that you feel will provide you the best support.

I'm sure you've taken some time to explore the Community as there's different ways you can access support. Alongside speaking to members in our Community groups, there's the Ask an Expert section where you can ask questions to the Nurses, Financial guides, support advisers, and Work Support Officers.

You’d be welcome to ask our Nurses about side effects and other concerns you may have here.

I hope this is all helpful to you but if you need some help finding some additional support or finding your way around the Online Community, please don’t hesitate to get back in touch with us.

You can contact the Online Community team by sending a private message to the Moderator account, or by emailing community@macmillan.org.uk.

    Best wishes,

    Megan

  • Thank you. It's really good to know that I'm not alone on this journey. I try to be strong for him when he's upset because he doesn't want to leave us and he's upset that he's putting me through it and I hate that there's nothing I can do to make it better. He got the diagnosis during lockdown 1 so we couldn't make any memories and now he can hardly move the kids are upset that they won't be able to do anything with their dad again. It's just a lot to deal with and I feel ill equipped to deal with most of it. The unknown is so hard.

  • Hi YT3,

It’s Megan here from Macmillan’s Online Community team. I firstly wanted to say how sorry I am to hear of what you and your husband are facing, it sounds like there’s a lot for your family to cope with just now.

When being there to support a loved one through a cancer diagnosis, it’s important to know what support there is for yourself. Here on the Community, there’s a Carers only group and the Family and friends forum should you need some to speak to others in a similar situation.

From looking at your profile I can see that you’ve already posted in the Carer’s only forum and some members have already replied to your post. If you’d like to respond back to them you can do so by clicking here and finding the ‘reply’ button under each post.

Alongside accessing peer to peer support on the site, please remember that the Macmillan Support Line has specialist teams on hand to provide emotional, practical and financial support, every day from 8am-8pm. You can speak to the specialist teams on 0808 808 00 00, by email or by using webchat during the opening hours.

When you contact the Support Line there will be options to speak to the Information Nurse Specialists, the Information and Support advisers, and the Money and Work teams. They can provide emotional support, practical information, and financial guidance alongside offering a listening ear.

I hope the above makes sense and if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email community@macmillan.org.uk. We’re here to help you use the Community for support and find any additional help that you may be looking for.

    Best wishes

    Megan
