Hystoscopy under GA tomorrow

Hi everyone

Im currently on the 2 week pathway for possible womb cancer. It’s been a whirlwind journey for sure!

Only had my TV ultrasound 3 weeks ago and have a hystoscopy booked under GA tomorrow. Had a failed biopsy attempt under local last week and thought I’d be waiting ages for a GA.

I’m terrified of the surgery tomorrow, as I have real anxiety over medical procedures after a previous bad experience with GA and surgery (in a completely unrelated area) and I’m also terrified of what they might find. I’m told my age is a good sign (46) but the fact I have PCOS and have never had children puts me at higher risk.

Heads all over the place today.

  • I have a hysterectomy on the 17th I have asked for GA but the secretary who phoned me for appointment reminder said If I wanted to go for that there would be a 12 week wait and as I was on high priority I should stick to the original appointment.  I am having panic attacks as I had a failed biopsy at another hospital. I have just been diagnosed with breast cancer again and they have given me tablets to suppress it until I have stomach operated on, I don't know what the problem is but it's so swollen. I am so scared.

  • Sorry to hear about your panic attacks, which are completely understandable. Can you ask the secretary to request a phone call from your oncologist or surgeon to talk it through?

  • Is it for a hysterectomy or hysteroscopy? I had a hysteroscopy with local anaesthetic and  gas and air and while injecting the local anaesthetic was not pleasant It was soon over and was a lot less painful than I'd feared. Local anaesthetic has never worked well for me either, it would probably be easier for other people. They gave me gas and air while they were removing a polyp and it was fantastic.  In your place I'd ask if they can let you have gas and air before they inject the local.  I felt great afterwards and I'm glad I didnt have to wait for a general. I second the idea of phoning the consultant or perhaps the McMillan support line 0808 808 00 00

  • Do hope you can speak to someone about this. It might be an idea to talk to your GP to see if they can help.

  • Just a quick update - it’s now 4 days post procedure and the cramping has eased off a lot. I am still having quite a bit of bleeding on and off. Mentally I am struggling and keep crying for no reason, think it’s the stress of waiting for results and also all the emotion of the last week coming out.

I was very lucky as after my failed biopsy I then had the procedure under GA exactly a week later, so didn’t have barely any additional wait at all.

  • Thinking about you and sending positive thoughts your way. My bleeding lasted for about 10 days after my hysteroscopy and almost 4 weeks later my emotions are still all over the place. It helps to share with people who understand what you are going through.x

  • The bleeding has now stopped but my period is due so sure it’ll be back soon!

My emotions are certainly all over the place too, I keep crying over absolutely nothing and not just a few tears but full on snot and running tears! x
