Mixed feelings after all clear

I was diagnosed with Stage 1 womb cancer on 3rd December and actually got a full abdominal hysterectomy at the Christie hospital in Manchester on 16th December.
4 weeks post op and I was told this week the cancer upon inspection hasn’t spread outside of the womb so I am Stage 1B. I don’t require any treatment.
I will be referred to the Sarcoma team as I had a Sarcoma tumour and will be monitored for next 10yrs with frequent chest x rays as IF it came back it can appear in the chest apparently.
Although I am obviously relieved I don’t need any treatment I feel a little numb and haven’t cried sighs of relief. It all just feels very surreal as my journey has been so quick.
Any advice on processing all of this?? I am returning to working at home only this week as I am desperate to return to some form of normality.

  • Hello Mumofboys41

I am sorry to hear of your diagnosis of a uterine sarcoma. It is great news that at stage 1B you do not need any further treatment.

I felt numb at the end of my treatment for a while and I think it is pretty normal to feel as you do. Everything moved really quickly from the diagnosis to the surgery and it is only once it is all over the processing can start. Surreal is a word I would agree with. Think of it this way perhaps, in 6 weeks you have had a diagnosis of cancer and a major op. It is going to all take time. I think also with the ongoing checks it can feel hard to completely put it all behind you. My checks were every 12 weeks and I found as soon as I was starting to get on with things again and feel more relaxed, another appointment letter would arrive. Perhaps once you have had your appointment with the sarcoma unit and have details of what will happen and when, things may feel a bit better. Sometimes it can be the unknown.

Talking and sharing on here helped me and do not forget we have the Support Line if you just feel like a chat would help. Sometimes it can feel easier to talk to someone neutral. The number is below.

  • It’s worth contacting your CNS to see if they do a “life after cancer” course - some do it as a whole day thing and other a weekly class. I understand your need to get back to work but please do be careful not to overdo things - you’re still healing internally and now is the time (when you’re feeling physically better) when it’s easy to overdo things. So I’d advise still being careful about lifting heavy things, repeated bending or standing for long periods. Just to say though I’m so pleased for you that you don’t need any adjuvant treatment!
