Waiting for biopsy results … how long does it take? Also what are white spots?

I’m 51 and had episodes of post menopausal bleeding so I had a hysteroscopy today- where I was informed by the Consultant that they found ‘white spots’ on my uterus.  The consultant said - at a guess they are cancerous or precancerous but we won’t know for sure until the biopsy results come back.  I am really scared.  The not knowing and waiting is so hard.
How long do these results normally take?

I have googled a lot but cannot find any information on white spots on uterus being a cancer sign.

i have read many of your journeys on here - and can’t imagine how hard it has been.

  • Hi Ktrob, welcome to the group! Well done for having had your hysteroscopy and, as hard as it is, I’d advise you to stop googling. These consultants do sometimes come out with words or terms that aren’t helpful to us, and this sounds like one of those times when he’s thrown out this vague term that hasn’t been explained properly. I imagine that he meant there’s some areas of your endometrium (uterus lining) where the surface looks different and suggests a change. They will have taken a biopsy of the endometrium - that will go to the lab, then the results will come back to what’s called your MDT (multi disciplinary team) for review and then you’ll get them. So it usually depends on what day of the week your MDT meets. My hospital is Southampton and my MDT met on a Friday morning. I had my hysteroscopy on a Wednesday - my consultant said I’d get a phone call in about 2 weeks. When 2 weeks was up, I phoned the consultant’s secretary to ask when I’d get the results, and she explained that my results had “missed” the last MDT (Friday morning) and would be at the next one, two days later, and that she’d book me a phone call. So I got mine 2 weeks and 2 days after my hysteroscopy. The time will vary from hospital to hospital so I’d suggest phoning the secretary and asking for (a) an idea of how long (b) on what day your MDT meet and (c) how you will hear, eg by phone/letter/face to face appointment. Wishing you all the best - feel free to click on my name to read my profile. I’m two years post hysterectomy and treatment.

  • Thank you so much for making more sense of what the consultant was saying.
Trying to stop googling but I am terrible!

Amazing to read your story and to see how quickly they got you in after biopsy results.  Thank you so much for sharing.

  • You’re welcome Ktrob. When I had my first hysteroscopy (which failed), I was able to look at the screen so I could see what the camera was seeing, so I know what the inside of my vagina and underside of my cervix looks like! Because my cervix was stenosed, he couldn’t get the camera through to do the hysteroscopy but I do remember seeing that things are supposed to look pink in there and him saying that they’d be looking for any differences/ changes. I then had another hysteroscopy under general anaesthetic a few weeks later. I hope you hear back soon - when you do, if it is cancer, I’d recommend asking for the contact details of your CNS (cancer nurse specialist) as they’re there to help and can be an invaluable source of info and support.

  • Hi Ktrob

    Welcome to the forum.

Am sorry to hear that you have had some bleeding and needed to have a hysteroscopy. It is naturally a worrying time.

I would advise not to google- it's just not going to give you the accurate information you need and is probably out of date.

Your consultant said about white spots but has said that he/she can not be sure what they are. As hard as it is, it is only the pathology that will confirm this.

My results took around a week from what I remember and I can remember being referred at the hysteroscopy appointment for a CT scan so I think for mine they were pretty sure from the outset.

Why not give the Support Line a call and have a chat with one of the nurses. They will understand and be able to talk you through everything. The number is below and they are lovely on there.

I hope you do not have to wait too long for your results but in the meantime we are here if you need us.

    Jane

  • Hello Ktrob,

sorry to hear you are also experiencing an unsettling time. Hopefully they are able to turn around your results quickly, but do also be aware it can take some weeks. I was told six weeks which will be this Friday and I am still waiting. They have assured me they are chasing histology - but the wait is hard. Get lots of things in your diary, I found keeping busy helped and only when I had time for my mind to wander the dreaded results thoughts came back into my head. Have my fingers crossed for you.

  • Thank you.  On my notes it says 'miliary deposits’ on cavity wall - but can’t find anything on google about these?

    thank you again

  • Oh my gosh!!!   6 weeks?!!!    I’ve been told 2-3 weeks maximum (but thought this too long -and hoped they’d exaggerated!).  Hope you get your results soon and that they are all ok.

  • Thanks so much Jane.  You are so kind and I will ring the support number maybe.    And try not to google!!   Although spent every minute since recovery doing it so far!!    Can’t find any reference to the ‘Miliary deposits’ my hospital notes refer to online   That’s my main research area currently!!!
    Thank you again

  • Ktrob, I have milia on my face - tiny white cysts. Have had them on my eyelids before. I’d imagine that what may be meant is that the endometrial surface may have some tiny white dots on it which is what they’re investigating. Milial is just an adjective, it’s not a diagnostic term. Try not to dwell on it and just wait for the results as speculating won’t help you. Try and focus what is known now, today.

  • Natural to want to know as much as possible but just make sure its accurate. I would give the Support Line a call and ask one of the nurses.
