3 months past radiotherapy. Is this the new normal?

  • Hi Jackie, have you been eating the same amount as pre op and treatment, and healthily? If you’ve been feeling down about it all and “comfort eating”, that might be something to do with it. I’d suggest contacting your CNS to ask about your hospital’s life after cancer course, or any other mental health support that they can offer.

  • On the contrary I have been dieting. I have been eating only two eggs and a tomato for breakfast. Greek yogurt with a banana and six walnuts for lunch.

Salmon or chicken with salad for dinner. And I am putting on weight

  • Ah okay - are you due a post treatment check over any time soon?

  • Hi Jackie

Why not give your CNS a call and get some reassurance. Are you due a check up soon? They may be able to bring it forward.

Going through treatment can be challenging and in my experience you don't just bounce back from it. For me everything happened so quickly from going to A&E then surgery 4 weeks later, followed with chemo and then radiotherapy- I didn't find that I was able to start processing everything until the treatment and appointments stopped. Many hospitals have after cancer support that can help. I did the HOPE programme through here and that helped me- however it was at a later stage.

Fatigue post treatment is common and not surprising after all the treatments. It is not unusual to feel emotional and low but there is help out there. Again CNS/GP should be able to help.

With the physical effects- I did not have any bloating, weight gain or nausea and these are things that would be better to be checked out. However it is still quite early days since the radiotherapy and it can, in some people continue to have effects for a few months before beginning to settle.

  • Just a thought - do you have two eggs every day? If so, that seems rather a lot of eggs cumulatively and I wonder if it might  be a contributory factor.

  • Thanks Jane. I have contacted my CNS a few times but they just keep palming it off.

  • This is just my diet days. Although yes I do eat 2 eggs for breakfast every day. If I anything else I will just swell up more that I cannot take grains or the additives they put into bread these days.

I try not to eat bread because I'm addicted to it and it has always made me bloat. But I do cave in sometimes and have a sandwich or a piece of toast which I know I shouldnt

  • I have a sensitivity re gluten and yeast so I eat maybe one slice a bread per week if at all. I don’t have bread or packet cereal for breakfast - I have overnight oats but don’t eat it till close to midday. You might find that this is a food sensitivity issue and could maybe try fruit for breakfast?

  • Yes I can try that. I can't eat oats either. My GP is testing me for celiac
